The History of Mawson & Company (Part II)
We do hope you enjoyed last month's blog, which detailed Tony's early life and his start in the hair industry. At the conclusion of Part I of Mawson & Company's history, Tony had just moved to Winchester and was pondering his options...
After originally considering working on a freelance basis Tony happened upon an empty (thanks to the recession of the 1990’s) building close to Winchester city centre. At five hundred square feet and with excellent frontage, 72, Parchment Street was perfect for a salon and so Mawson&Company was born.
Melinda Hurd, our current General Manager, and Kerry Hardy joined Tony at this time, and both became management team members and shareholders in the business.
The new Winchester salon was instantly busy with space quickly running out due to the surge in demand, and a quick following was garnered by the salon.
It was during this time that the Aveda brand came to Tony’s attention.
He and the Mawson&Company team felt an instant empathy with the Aveda philosophy, and Aveda’s principles of exceptional service and an outstanding product offering resonated. Thus, since these early days, Aveda has been the sole product used within the Mawson&Company salon.
At the same time, Mawson&Company in Parchment Street became an Aveda Concept Salon, using shampoos, conditioners, treatments and enabling clients to also use the same products at home.
By 2000, demand for the services of Mawson&Company was greater than ever. Tony looked to move the salon and team to The Square and eventually, two years later in July 2002, 14 The Square (the salon’s current home) became available. In conjunction with the change of address, the business became the very first independent Aveda Lifestyle Salon to open outside of London.
Once installed in the new premises, bookings trebled. Located on the main thoroughfare to Winchester Cathedral from the high street, awareness of the salon continued to grow.
Interior-wise, the current Mawson&Company salon has been styled in such a way as to attempt to attract people of like-minded taste into the salon to enjoy an atmosphere that is stylish, understated, warm and welcoming.
Along with the increasing clientele numbers following the salon’s relocation, the number of stylists and assistants also increased, with individuals recognising the delightful position and environment offered by the city and the salon.
Since the move to The Square in 2002, the salon has continued to thrive, with the current team numbering 26. The unique style of the salon coupled with exceptional levels of service and a continued use of the Aveda brand has meant that Mawson&Company are considered one of Winchester’s most favoured salons.
Apprentices receive a high level of support and, as well as their college training, also receive
training and mentoring within the salon environment thanks to a unique in-house training programme put together and delivered by team members Mark, Ross and Sarah.
Sarah is the salon’s Aveda Ambassador and is regularly trained (along with other individuals in the team) in the latest technical innovations at the Aveda academy in Fitzrovia, London. Once completed, training recipients return to share new techniques and ideas with the rest of the team remaining to serve clients in their absence.
Twenty-five years since the inception of Mawson&Company in Winchester, Tony continues to be in the salon most days, and is available on Saturdays to see clients.
Always attempting to exceed guest’s expectations by offering an outstanding experience and considered, bespoke services has been Tony’s mantra since the outset, and this philosophy lives on twenty-five years later.
To quote Tony; “Detail is everything”.
